Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
The first one said, “Oh my, it’s getting late!”
The second one said, “There are witches in the air!”
The third one said, “Well, I don’t care!”
The fourth one said, “Let’s run, run, run!”
The fifth one said, “I’m ready for some fun!”
OOOOOOoo went the wind and
OUT (clap) went the lights.
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.

HOW IT WENT:
Today’s storytime was hard.  I called all the storytime parents yesterday, and let them know that since we were having a Halloween themed storytime, the children were welcome to come in costume.  I think maybe wearing a costume allows the wearer to be a different person, because it seemed harder to get through things today.

As you can see, I forgot to include a parent tip, because I just was so unfocused (and also, since it is new, not in the habit yet.)  What Am I? Halloween was a really long book for this crowd, so I cut out a few of the pages.  The idea that you don’t have to read a book straight through was going to be my parent tip, but I just was so worried about getting the kids’ attention back that I just moved along to the next thing.  I forgot to do 2 verses of Itsy Bitsy Spider.

The Nursery Rhyme just didn’t seem to be as familiar as others as well.  I was thinking that maybe in the future I should have a laminated page with the words of the rhyme on it that is backed in flannel — then I could put that up on the board so that parents would be able to join in.

But the kids in costume were adorable!  And the new bounce worked well.

I work with one of the parents from my infant group, so at lunch today I apologized to her for the storytime.  She told me she didn’t even notice that things were harder.  It’s reassuring to know that even when I feel like things are going all wrong on the inside, it doesn’t always show the audience.

Mice – Infant Storytime

If you are going to do a cat storytime, it seems only fair to follow that up with a mice storytime!  So today, we celebrated the many ways that mice are nice.

Little mouse, little mouse
Are you in the (insert color here) house?

I know I use this rhyme a lot, but it is one of my favorites.  When using it with the infants, I put fewer houses up on the flannelboard so it doesn’t take as much time.  I like hiding other animals in the different houses so that it is a surprise when things are uncovered. The ones picture above are from some of my ArtFelt sets.  I also like to leave one house empty with “nobody home”.

HOW IT WENT:
This was a good storytime.  I only realized now, when writing it up, that I had forgotten to do our tickle rhyme during this storytime!  That was ok, though, because we had someone from Head Start come to talk about the early programs that they offer.  It made up for that time.

I am going to try to work in some more parent patter/parent tips during my infant toddler storytimes.  I got this one from a great book and cards set from ALA.  It’s super helpful and easy to use, and gives lots of great parent tips along with an activity for each of them.  I always feel slightly uncomfortable with parent tips, because who am I to tell a parent what they should be doing, especially since I do not have children myself.  But I need to accept that I do have knowledge they may not (especially when it comes to early literacy practices), and that it is perfectly appropriate to share that knowledge with them.

Cats – Infant Storytime

I had so much fun at our cat eStorytime that I decided to continue with the theme for the beginning of our fall infant toddler storytime session.   Plus, I can’t believe it has been so long since I did a cat storytime for this age group!

(Adapted from “Ten in the Bed”)
There were five kittens in the bed,
And the little one said, “It’s crowded.  Roll over.”
So they all rolled over, and one fell out;

There were four kittens in the bed…
There were three kittens in the bed…
There were two kittens in the bed…

There was one kitten in the bed,
And the little one said, “I’m lonely.”

So they all got back in the bed,
And the little one said, “Good night!”

Let’s Sing – Infants

Here’s a storytime I did for my last round of infant storytimes that I forgot to post!  I can’t believe I’ve never done songs before as a theme – there’s so many options out there, and it fits in perfectly with Every Child Ready to Read early literacy practices.

MOVEMENT: Storytime’s Over*

HOW IT WENT:
There are a lot of great stories and songs you can do for this theme.  I Love the Marla Frazee version of Hush Little Baby, but I found the page turns, combined with singing, didn’t work as well for me — I think I rushed through a little fast.  I may need to practice that one more, or do it as a flannelboard in the future.  Also, after I sang/read “Little White Duck” I mentioned to parents that, see, you don’t have to have a great voice to sing to your children — they like it no matter what!  And, bless their hearts, some of the parents responded: “You do have a good voice.”  They flatter me, and I appreciate it.

Green (St. Patrick’s Day) – Infants

There are not a lot of good St. Patrick’s Day stories for infants (at least, not that I have right now), so this one was a Green (heavy on shamrocks) storytime.

BOUNCE: I’m a Little Cuckoo Clock*

(template from Google images search)

Five Green Shamrocks (counting up)
(rhyme from DLTK Holidays)
One green shamrock, in the morning dew,
Another one sprouted,
and then there were two.

Two green shamrocks, growing beneath a tree;
Another one sprouted,
and then there were three.

Three green shamrocks, by the cottage door;
Another one sprouted,
and then there were four.

Four green shamrocks, near a beehive
Another one sprouted,
and then there were five.

Five little shamrocks, bright and emerald green,
Think of all the luck
these shamrocks will bring.

Five Green Shamrocks (counting down)
(rhyme taken from King County Library Wiki)
5 little shamrocks lying in the grass
along came a leprechaun skipping down the path
he picked one up and put it on the door
that’s for good luck now there are 4

4 little shamrocks lying in the grass
along came a leprechaun skipping down the path
he picked it up and and put it on a tree
that’s for good luck now there are 3

3 little shamrocks lying in the grass
along came a leprechaun skipping down the path
he picked it up and put it on his shoe
that’s for good luck now there are 2

2 little shamrocks lying in the grass
along came a leprechaun skipping down the path
he picked it up and held it toward the sun
that’s for good luck now there is 1

1 little shamrock lying in the grass
along came a leprechaun skipping down the path
he left it there so there’d always be 1
that’s for good luck and now my story’s done!

HOW IT WENT:
While St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t lend itself very well to stories for young ones, this was still an enjoyable storytime.  Where is the Green Sheep? went over very well with the audience today — even though it can be a little long the parents seemed to stick with it.  I shortened Green a little bit to work with the group, but that one was good too.

Couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again.

When I do this, at the end it’s fun to put Humpty together in the wrong way (middle on bottom, head in middle, feet on top, etc) a couple of times and see if the audience can get it right.

How many boots should a duckling buy
To keep his feet nice and dry?
Let’s count her feet and then we’ll know —
We can count.  Let’s go!
One, Two.
Two new boots is what he should buy.
That will keep the duckling dry.
(Place boots on duckling and count again.)

How many boots should a bunny buy
To keep her feet nice and dry?
Let’s count her feet and then we’ll know —
We can count.  Let’s go!
One, two, three, four.
Four new boots is what she should buy.
That will keep the bunny dry.

How many boots should a spider buy
To keep his feet nice and dry?
Let’s count his feet and then we’ll know —
We can count.  Let’s go!
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
Eight new boots is what he should buy.
That will keep the spider dry.
(Place boots on spider and count again.)

I like to end this one buy counting all the feet we have on the board, then having the kids say goodbye to each animal as I take them off the flannelboard.

HOW IT WENT:
This was a fun storytime, and I really like Busy Toes for all the diversity that the book includes.  Whose Feet? also worked extremely well — I wish that one was still in print, because our copy is a little worse for wear.  This time, I started a new bounce, but I didn’t bring my stuffed animal in to illustrate the bounce.  Last time the stuffed bear was there, one of the infants really wanted it and started crying.  But I think it works better to show with the animal, so I may try bringing it again next time I change up the bounce or tickle.

I really enjoyed this storytime, because there were so many ways of making it interactive.  When reading Piggies I encouraged all the parents to do the motions with their child.  We did Dickery Dickery Dare as a bounce where you lift the child up in the air.  And of course we did This Little Piggy as a fingerplay along with the flannelboard.  With all the bouncing and lifting, parents got a workout with their children today!
