Snow – Infant Storytime

Since this was the last storytime of the Fall session, it seemed fitting to finish things up with a winter theme of snow.

Toys – Infant Storytime

With my new grant focusing on bringing play into the library, I wanted to have one of my storytimes during this session focus on play. My coworker did a storytime with that theme a little bit ago, so to mix it up a bit I decided to focus on toys.

HOW IT WENT:
So, I had some technical difficulties at this storytime — the settings on the speakers were making my music sound very tin-y and unpleasant. So this storytime was done accapella. Who needs backing vocals and instruments anyway! I was just glad I remembered the words to everything — you would think that after doing storytime for how-many years I would remember, but there’s always that moment of, “Oh no I’m going to forget it all!” But I think it helped get everyone involved in the storytime.

Other than that, things went just peachy. I think the selections for this one were pretty good.

I’m especially thankful that all the parents humored me as I sang instead of read Over the River and Through the Wood. Since that has a lot of wordless double-page spreads, I did the same thing I did last time and paper-clipped all by the first one together to shorten the book. I figure this makes a good parent patter moment, and that you can let parents know that there is no wrong way to read a book — starting at the middle, or skipping over things is alright — just follow baby’s cues.

This was a good storytime. I like “I’m a Little Cuckoo Clock” as a bounce. We did it three times in a row, and that didn’t seem like overkill. Slow Snail is a regular sized board book, but I thought the pictures were simple enough to carry across the room and still be seen. I love Mary Murphy’s books. I picked Little Miss Muffet as today’s nursery rhyme because if I had a spider sit next to me during my breakfast, I would probably move pretty quickly away.

HOW IT WENT:
Today’s storytime was hard. I called all the storytime parents yesterday, and let them know that since we were having a Halloween themed storytime, the children were welcome to come in costume. I think maybe wearing a costume allows the wearer to be a different person, because it seemed harder to get through things today.

As you can see, I forgot to include a parent tip, because I just was so unfocused (and also, since it is new, not in the habit yet.) What Am I? Halloween was a really long book for this crowd, so I cut out a few of the pages. The idea that you don’t have to read a book straight through was going to be my parent tip, but I just was so worried about getting the kids’ attention back that I just moved along to the next thing. I forgot to do 2 verses of Itsy Bitsy Spider.

The Nursery Rhyme just didn’t seem to be as familiar as others as well. I was thinking that maybe in the future I should have a laminated page with the words of the rhyme on it that is backed in flannel — then I could put that up on the board so that parents would be able to join in.

But the kids in costume were adorable! And the new bounce worked well.

I work with one of the parents from my infant group, so at lunch today I apologized to her for the storytime. She told me she didn’t even notice that things were harder. It’s reassuring to know that even when I feel like things are going all wrong on the inside, it doesn’t always show the audience.

I also like to leave one house empty with “nobody home”.

This was a good storytime. I only realized now, when writing it up, that I had forgotten to do our tickle rhyme during this storytime! That was ok, though, because we had someone from Head Start come to talk about the early programs that they offer. It made up for that time.

I am going to try to work in some more parent patter/parent tips during my infant toddler storytimes. I got this one from a great book and cards set from ALA. It’s super helpful and easy to use, and gives lots of great parent tips along with an activity for each of them. I always feel slightly uncomfortable with parent tips, because who am I to tell a parent what they should be doing, especially since I do not have children myself. But I need to accept that I do have knowledge they may not (especially when it comes to early literacy practices), and that it is perfectly appropriate to share that knowledge with them.

HOW IT WENT:
There are a lot of great stories and songs you can do for this theme. I Love the Marla Frazee version of Hush Little Baby, but I found the page turns, combined with singing, didn’t work as well for me — I think I rushed through a little fast. I may need to practice that one more, or do it as a flannelboard in the future. Also, after I sang/read “Little White Duck” I mentioned to parents that, see, you don’t have to have a great voice to sing to your children — they like it no matter what! And, bless their hearts, some of the parents responded: “You do have a good voice.” They flatter me, and I appreciate it.
