Trains – Toddler Storytime

Another day covering storytime this week.  It’s been fun to get out there and experience what my team does on a regular basis.  In my current role I don’t get to do a lot of storytimes, so it’s fun when I get to step in.

As I’ve tried to do when I cover, I want to take on some of the elements that my colleagues use so that there is continuity for those who are attending the storytime.  So you may see a lot of new elements below that I stole borrowed from my colleague who usually runs toddler storytime.

Listen Up! Train Song by Victoria Allenby

This was the book that made me want to do a train storytime.  I got it awhile ago, but I hadn’t read it for a storytime yet.  It was fun, but I wonder if there was some way to get the audience a little more included in the sound portion.

How time does fly!

Train Safety – Preschool Storytime

I just realized I had a bunch of storytime posts that I had saved in draft format and never published!  This is one of them.

I was contacted by our local Metro staff to see if they could present at the library about Train Safety.  We ended up on wrapping it in to a storytime about trains.  The kids had fun and hopefully learned some tips on how to be safe!

Trains – Preschool Storytime

Today was my library’s One City, One Story day, with a lot of programming centered around Christina Baker Kline’s Orphan Train.  Including a Lionel Train set-up and running, complete with sounds and lights, in our library’s main hall.  Doing a train storytime seemed the only way to go.  Also it gave me a great reason to use my train whistle!

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:
It was hard to compete with the real toy train set up in our library’s main hall.  But, eventually we did get a good turnout for this storytime.  I put it together in a short amount of time — I think I might have had a better selection of books if I had thought more ahead of time.  But it went well, and the kids seemed to enjoy it.

I remembered my lesson after last storytime and did a calming down rhyme (Grandma’s Spectacles) after Shaking our Sillies out.  It helped some, but I think I need to come up with more.
