Geese – Toddler Storytime

When I started thinking of storytime themes, I thought there might be enough books out there to do a storytime about geese.  This storytime was presented on 5/31/2016.

taken from jbrary

MOVEMENT:  “Wake Up Toes” from Morning Magic by Joanie Bartels

MOVEMENT:

FLANNELBOARD:

Goosey Goose Colors
taken from Magical Library Book Bug

Goosey, goosey gander
Please come play with me.
Goosey, goosey “red” goose
Join the flock and me.

Pass out geese to all the children.  Then, recite the rhyme and have the children holding that color goose come up and place it on the flannelboard.  When they are done, recite the rhyme again, substituting the color red for another color.  Continue this until you’ve gone through all the colored geese that you have.

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:
Duck & Goose Let’s Dance is a board book, but I thought since I could do an activity with it (have the kids dance as instructed by the book), the size might not matter.  It seemed to work pretty well, and I would do it again.

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:
Moms are a sweet topic for storytime.  I think that Piglet and Mama might have been too long for my 10am group.  It seemed to go alright with the 11am, so I think it does work for toddlers, it just depends on the group that you have.  So, when picking my books I may need to be a little more aware of length of the story.

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:
I originally was thinking about doing a different flannelboard for this group, but it seemed the wiggles were going around, so I thought this one with a song might be better.  Shout out to my friend Diana G., who gave me this flannelboard at the Los Angeles Storytime Underground flannelboard swap this weekend.  (Thanks Diana!)

When I read Lemons are Not Red it says that carrots are not purple, they’re orange, but sometimes they are purple…  I know that kids aren’t going to be bothered by this.  But then after storytime I also had a parent tell me that the moon, in fact, is black as it is only made colored by the light’s reflection off it, so maybe it’s time to pick a different story for colors.

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:
Pandas turned out to be a better them than I first thought it might.  I think reading both those books might have been too long for the toddler attention spans, though — next time I might pick one and then choose a shorter option from my additional materials list.  The flannelboard worked really well though.

Here comes little bird
He’s landing on your HEAD.
Bye bye little bird.
Bye! Bye! Bye!

To this rhyme, I added a little bit.  After we identified where the bird landed I something along the lines of, “Do you want a bird on your foot?  No?  Ok, let’s shake him off!”  Then we shook that body part and the felt bird flew off the felt girl, only to land a moment later on a different body part.

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:
This was a really fun storytime.  I love all the movement and fun that comes along with books about body parts.  This was my first time reading Harrington’s Nose to Toes… and it basically begs to be sung instead of read, so I did that.  While you can find the official song that goes with the book here, I just used my only melody and did what felt right for me for the story.

Hide the worm behind one of the books before you start.  Then say this rhyme:

Wiggleworm, wiggleworm, hiding in a book.
Wiggleworm, wiggleworm, where should we look?

Then ask for the color of the book and look under to see if the worm is there!

We played this two different ways – first I recited them rhyme, had the kids tell me the color of the book, and we peeked underneath.  Repeat until the worm was discovered.  After that, the worm wanted to hide in another book and, without the rhyme, I just had the kids tell me different colors to look under.  I played stupid asking if blue was green, etc.  It was fun both ways!

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:
This was a fun storytime.  I think that This Little Piggy might have been a bit long for the group.  I was hoping that the kids/parents would play along on their fingers and toes, but that didn’t really happen.  Maybe I need to look into the song that comes as a download with the book.  Using Ten Clean Pigs as my second book seemed to be exactly the right length.  While that book has two stories in one, I think I’ve read the Ten Dirty Pigs for other storytimes, so I thought I’d try something new.

I think that the Baby’s First-Word stories are some of the best for this age group.  They are so slowly paced, and the kids get so quiet while watching them.  It really holds their attention.

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:
I forgot that sometimes you need to start storytime out with books for really little ones, even if you’re doing the older age group.  I find that helps the kids adjust to me and get used to storytime, since they’ve had a different storyteller if they were in the session prior.
