Geese – Infant Storytime

I don’t know why, but I decided that I should do a goose storytime!  Let the HONKing begin!  I presented this one as the last storytime in my Spring 2016 session on 5/31/2016.

MOVEMENT: “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” from Songs for Wiggleworms by the Old Town School of Folk Music
MOVEMENT:  Now it’s Time to Say Goodbye
taken from jbrary

HOW IT WENT:
Gossie might have been a little long for the infants, but I think the parents enjoyed it.  I was happy that I found a slightly larger board book version of this, because it’s hard to read Dunrea’s goose books in storytime since they are all so small.  It’s the Padded Board Book size seen here (though I got my copy from my local bookstore), so it’s 8.2 x 1.2 x 6.6 inches instead of the hardback’s 6 x 0.4 x 6 inches size.  I don’t know how much of a difference those two inches made, but it made me feel better about sharing it.

ADDITIONAL MATERIAL IDEAS:

Book: Boasts by Anne Rockwell

HOW IT WENT:

Looking at the photo of my flannelboard, I’m realizing that I really need to outline the black or darker colors in a lighter color puffy paint so they stand out more.  This is a useful note, because I used to use a blue backed flannelboard, so the black pieces were fine — on a black background, they blend it.  So, puffy paint for maximum useability!

The Going to Bed Book wouldn’t be my first thought when planning a boat storytime, but it worked well with this group, especially because it is a larger lap-sized version.

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:
Moms are a sweet topic for storytime.  I think that Piglet and Mama might have been too long for my 10am group.  It seemed to go alright with the 11am, so I think it does work for toddlers, it just depends on the group that you have.  So, when picking my books I may need to be a little more aware of length of the story.

HOW IT WENT:
There are a lot of nice books for little ones about mothers out there, which makes this a fun storytime to put together.  I had never read Mama’s Little Bears before at a storytime, but I really liked it as a choice for this one.  It seemed to be a nice blend to have one really sweet book, and then one that was more of a story with a mother.

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:
I originally was thinking about doing a different flannelboard for this group, but it seemed the wiggles were going around, so I thought this one with a song might be better.  Shout out to my friend Diana G., who gave me this flannelboard at the Los Angeles Storytime Underground flannelboard swap this weekend.  (Thanks Diana!)

When I read Lemons are Not Red it says that carrots are not purple, they’re orange, but sometimes they are purple…  I know that kids aren’t going to be bothered by this.  But then after storytime I also had a parent tell me that the moon, in fact, is black as it is only made colored by the light’s reflection off it, so maybe it’s time to pick a different story for colors.

THOUGHTS ON THIS STORYTIME:
Pandas turned out to be a better them than I first thought it might.  I think reading both those books might have been too long for the toddler attention spans, though — next time I might pick one and then choose a shorter option from my additional materials list.  The flannelboard worked really well though.
