Hello! – Infant Storytime

It’s my rotation for our infant storytime, so for the next couple weeks you’ll be seeing posts on those topics more often.  Since this was the first storytime of the session, I wanted to start things off by saying “HELLO!”.

MOVEMENT: Welcome Song*

MOVEMENT: Peek-a-Boo*

BOUNCE: Icky Bicky Soda Cracker*

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE: sign for “Hello”
asl-hello
taken from Costello, Elaine Ph.D.  Random House Webster’s American Sign Language Dictionary.  1994.

BOOK:
hellobabybyfox
Hello Baby!
by Mem Fox, illustrated by Steve Jenkins

MOVEMENT: “Clap, Tap and Bend” from It’s Toddler Time by Carol Hammett and Elaine Bueffel

FLANNELBOARD:
Say Hello to Your Toes
Where is Your Bellybutton
Idea taken from one little librarian, who found it at Storytime Secrets. I used the pattern I had from my flannelboard “Where is Baby’s Bellybutton?”

(to the tune of “London Bridge”)
Let’s say hello to our toes,
Hello toes, hello toes
Let’s say hello to our toes
Hello toes.

Other Verses:
– knees
– tummy
– shoulders
– head
– bellybutton

Template and Rhyme from Mother Goose’s Playhouse by Judy Sierra

Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep
And doesn’t know where to find them.

MOVEMENT: “Itsy Bitsy Spider” from Children’s Favorite Songs Volume 3 from Walt Disney

MOVEMENT: “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” from Songs for Wiggleworms by the Old Town School of Folk Music

MOVEMENT: Storytime’s Over*

ADDITIONAL MATERIAL IDEAS:
sayhellolikethisbymurphyhelloworldbystojic

Book: Say Hello Like This! by Mary Murphy
Book: Hello World!: Greetings in 42 Languages Around the Globe! by Manya Stojic. (This one is just great big pictures of children from different cultures and how they say hello in their language.  Since it’s long, a selection of it may work better, but I wanted to write it down as a future idea.)

GREAT RESOURCES FOR MORE IDEAS:
one little librarian – toddler time: hello hello
The Wielded Pen – Hello, Goodbye – A Storytime Outline

HOW IT WENT:
This was a fun theme to use for the first storytime in a series!  With Hello Baby! I did end up paper clipping a couple of the pages together because I worried it might have been too long for the first storytime of the session.

I always get a little worried about doing infant storytimes again when it’s been a long time away, but I always forget that I love doing it so much that it makes it easy.

ATTENDANCE: 52 people (adults and children)

Bears – Infant Storytime

MOVEMENT: Storytime’s Over*

ADDITIONAL MATERIAL IDEAS:
bear-of-my-heart-by-ryder

Book: Bear of My Heart by Joanne Ryder, illustrated by Margie Moore (This one may be a little long, but I think with the sweetness factor it may work well for infants).

HOW IT WENT:
I wasn’t sure if Ben Loves Bear would work well in a storytime setting, since it is a smaller board book. But, the story was so sweet that I couldn’t pass it up.  And I think the illustrations were large enough so that it carried.

ATTENDANCE: 40 people

Swimming – Infant Storytime

I love Anna McQuinn’s books about Lola and Leo, so when I saw our library had received a new title, I knew that was going to be my storytime theme for today!  This is a one-off because I was just filling in for a co-worker.

MOVEMENT: Welcome Song*

Swimming all day long

Other verses:
With her feet she paddle, paddle, paddles… (paddle hands)
With her tail she goes swish, swish, swish… (swish bottom)

Before singing the verses, I talked about the different parts of the duck that did each movement.

ADDITIONAL MATERIAL IDEAS:
At the Pool by Stanley

Book: At the Pool / Vamos a la piscina by Mandy Stanley (I thought this one might make a good flannelboard too, to talk about all the different things you can see at the pool).

HOW IT WENT:
This was a good storytime.  There were not too many great books for infants that fit this theme, but I really enjoyed the ones that I did find, so I think it worked out well.

ATTENDANCE: 27 people

Dads – Infant Storytime

Hush Little Baby
taken from The Flannel Board Storytelling Book 2nd Edition by Judy Sierra

Hush little baby, don’t say a word,
Papa’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.
If that mockingbird won’t sing,
Papa’s gonna buy you a diamond ring
If that diamond ring turns brass,
Papa’s gonna buy you a looking glass.
If that looking glass gets broke,
Papa’s gonna buy you a billy goat.
If that billy goat won’t pull,
Papa’s gonna buy you a cart and bull.
If that cart and bull turn over,
Papa’s gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
If that dog named Rover won’t bark,
Papa’s gonna buy you a horse and cart.
If that horse and cart fall down,
you’ll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

Book: Faster! Faster! by Leslie Patricelli
Book: Where’s My Daddy? adapted from a story by Shigeo Watanabe, pictures by Yasuo Ohtomo
Book: Daddy Hugs by Nancy Tafuri

HOW IT WENT:
You’ll find that this storytime bears a striking resemblance to the earlier Dad-themed storytime I’ve done.  This is mostly because I learned I was doing storytime the day before and a lot of the dad books had already been checked out by then.

Also, this storytime doesn’t have a second book because I cut things a little short so we could sign the kids up for our Summer Reading Program which started that week.

ATTENDANCE: 31 people (adults and kids)

Geese – Infant Storytime

MOVEMENT:  Now it’s Time to Say Goodbye
taken from jbrary

HOW IT WENT:
Gossie might have been a little long for the infants, but I think the parents enjoyed it.  I was happy that I found a slightly larger board book version of this, because it’s hard to read Dunrea’s goose books in storytime since they are all so small.  It’s the Padded Board Book size seen here (though I got my copy from my local bookstore), so it’s 8.2 x 1.2 x 6.6 inches instead of the hardback’s 6 x 0.4 x 6 inches size.  I don’t know how much of a difference those two inches made, but it made me feel better about sharing it.

HOW IT WENT:

Looking at the photo of my flannelboard, I’m realizing that I really need to outline the black or darker colors in a lighter color puffy paint so they stand out more.  This is a useful note, because I used to use a blue backed flannelboard, so the black pieces were fine — on a black background, they blend it.  So, puffy paint for maximum useability!

The Going to Bed Book wouldn’t be my first thought when planning a boat storytime, but it worked well with this group, especially because it is a larger lap-sized version.

HOW IT WENT:
There are a lot of nice books for little ones about mothers out there, which makes this a fun storytime to put together.  I had never read Mama’s Little Bears before at a storytime, but I really liked it as a choice for this one.  It seemed to be a nice blend to have one really sweet book, and then one that was more of a story with a mother.

HOW IT WENT:
Pandas was a fun theme for storytime — I’d like to think it’s infant appropriate since it’s the vivid colors of black and white.  Unfortunately, our library didn’t have quite as many books at the ready for infants about pandas, but I’m really glad I found Panda Big and Panda Small – it read well and got a large “aawwww” from the parents at the end.  Most of the books from this DK Toddler Story Book series are pretty good.

It was a small group this week.  I need to add some more people from the wait list.
